Drinking water is not what it used to be. Nowadays you can buy purified, spring, oxygenated, sparkling, artesian waters, and more. Vitamin-enhanced water is the recent water rage, but if you're eating healthfully on the Best Life Diet, do you really need these extras added to your drink? Best Life nutritionist Tracy Olgeaty Gensler, M.S., R.D., tells you what you need to know about vitamin water.
Question: Do I need to drink water with added vitamins?
Olgeaty Gensler: Vitamin water is fortified with vitamins and other additives, and some even include a sweetener that adds calories to the drink. If you're eating a balanced diet and taking a multivitamin as you should on the Best Life, you won't need vitamin water. Since Best Lifers are trying to lose weight, you'd need to account for the calories in the vitamin water. And if you have heart disease or kidney disease, the potassium in some types of vitamin water may be concerning because too much potassium can interrupt your heart or kidney function.
Fruits, vegetables and other whole foods are the best sources of vitamins and minerals. Of course, drinking plain water as Bob recommends, is important, too.
